Short for Independent Team, Indie Teams are improv troupes not officially attached to an established theater company. For an example of what it’s like to be on a NYC Indie Team, check out the film Don’t Think Twice, directed by Mike Birbiglia. While the fictional team featured in the movie (The Commune) is depicted as a well established high-profile team that has it’s own following, they masterfully exhibit the highs, the lows, the struggles, and the day-to-day operations of what it’s like to be a functional member of an aspiring NYC Indie Team.
What’s an “Indie Team”?
Since the Pandemic, it has become noticeable that the NYC Indie Improv scene has expanded, while the brick & mortar theater stages have somewhat diminished. Given this surplus of indie teams, we have observed that there is a lack of awareness of who they are, where they play, and how to contact them.
Enter The NYC Indie Team Directory.
The idea is to create an online space where these teams can be found, featured, and highlighted. Hopefully this directory can serve as a helpful tool within the NYC Improv Community to network, build, and play together.
